Can you run 12V gear off a DeWALT XR battery?
Yes. If you are on the DeWALT platform you are already carrying serious stored power, especially if you run the big FlexVolt packs. The catch is you cannot wire a battery straight to your gear. A fully charged DeWALT 18V battery sits at around 20V off the charger. Feed that raw into a 12V fridge or light and you risk cooking it.
A ZED adapter sits in the middle and regulates the output down to a steady 12V (about 13.5V, the same as a car with the engine running), so your gear sees clean, safe power no matter how full or flat the battery is. It gives you that 12V out through a genuine Anderson plug or a cigarette socket, the same as a 12V outlet in your 4WD.
Is DeWALT 18V or 20V?
This one trips people up, so here is the short version. It is the same battery. DeWALT sells it as 18V XR here in Australia and across the UK and Europe, and as 20V MAX in North America. The 18V is the nominal voltage the battery does its work at; the 20V is the peak voltage of a fresh pack straight off the charger. Nothing has changed inside, only the sticker.
FlexVolt packs run the same way. A FlexVolt battery is 54V (marketed as 60V MAX) when it powers a big FlexVolt tool, and it drops back to 18V (20V MAX) for everything else, including a ZED adapter. What do you need to run 12V gear off DeWALT batteries?
The kit list is short, and you already own most of it:

How long will a DeWALT battery run my gear?
It comes down to your battery size in amp-hours and how hard your gear works. DeWALT XR batteries run from compact 2Ah packs up to 5Ah and 8Ah, and FlexVolt goes further again with 9Ah, 12Ah and 15Ah packs. Anything from 5Ah up is a solid base for running gear.
Here is a real number. We tested a 32L Engel fridge set to 4 degrees, in 26 degree shade, running off a Middle Man with two 6Ah batteries, and it held temperature for about 24 hours. As a rough guide:

Why run a low voltage cutoff on a DeWALT battery?
Here is the bit worth knowing. Like most tool batteries, a DeWALT pack leans on the tool to manage low voltage during normal use. Clip one on a drill and the tool stops pulling power before the battery runs too flat. Run that same battery on its own, powering a fridge overnight, and there is nothing watching the door. Flatten a lithium battery too far and you can kill it for good, and DeWALT packs are not cheap.

A "DeWALT to Milwaukee" or "Milwaukee to DeWALT" adapter is a tool-to-tool gadget that tries to run one brand's tools off the other brand's battery. A ZED adapter is a different thing altogether: it gives you a regulated 12V accessory output for fridges, lights, pumps and comms, through Anderson and cigarette plugs.
