What is a volt dropper?
A volt dropper is a battery adapter that steps your tool battery's voltage down to 12V. That is the whole idea. Tradies and tourers use the word because it does exactly what it says: it drops 18V or 20V down to 12V so you can run normal 12V gear off the cordless batteries already in your kit.
It is not a tool-to-tool adapter, and it is not an inverter. It does not run 240V gear. It gives you a clean 12V DC output through an Anderson plug or a cigarette socket, the same as a 12V outlet in your 4WD.
How does a volt dropper work?
Here is the part that matters. You cannot wire a tool battery straight to a 12V fridge or light. A fully charged 18V battery actually sits close to 20V off the charger. Feed that raw into 12V gear and you risk cooking it.
A volt dropper sits in the middle and regulates the output down to a steady 12V (about 13.5V), so your gear sees clean, safe power no matter how full or flat the battery is. A good one also watches the battery. What can you run off a volt dropper?
Anything that runs off a 12V cigarette or Anderson socket and stays under the adapter's amp rating. That covers most off-grid gear:

Is a volt dropper the same as a battery adapter or a converter?
Mostly, yes. Volt dropper, battery adapter and step-down adapter all describe the same thing: a unit that takes a tool battery and gives you a regulated 12V output. ZED calls ours battery adapters; plenty of people call them volt droppers. Same job.
A "DC-DC converter" is the regulating circuit doing the work inside. An inverter is a different animal again: it makes 240V AC, not 12V DC, and it is not what you want for a fridge or camp lights. If your gear has a cigarette plug or an Anderson plug, a volt dropper is the tool for the job.
Which volt dropper for Milwaukee, Makita or DeWALT?
Each adapter is built for one battery brand. The battery connection plate, the part your battery clips onto, is different for Milwaukee M18, Makita LXT and DeWALT XR / FlexVolt. So you pick your brand when you order. The 12V output side is identical no matter which you choose.
One thing worth knowing. Makita batteries have their own internal disconnect, so on Makita the battery looks after itself, while on Milwaukee and DeWALT the ZED LVD does the protecting. Either way the battery is covered.

What makes a good volt dropper
They are not all the same. A cheap one is a circuit board in a brittle plastic box. The difference shows up the first hot, dusty, bumpy day on a worksite or a corrugated track. Here is what to look for:
- A regulated output, not raw battery voltage. Steady 12V (about 13.5V) protects your gear.
- A real low voltage disconnect. It should cut off before the battery over-discharges and then stop drawing, so it cannot flatten the battery after cut-off.
- Genuine Anderson plugs and proper wire. Tight, low-loss connections that do not melt or rattle loose.
