How long will my fridge run on a tool battery?
Pick your battery, pick your fridge, get an honest answer. Not a lab-perfect number, a real range, built from our own bench testing and manufacturer specs. The assumptions are laid out in full below the calculator.
- What moves the number: ambient heat, how full the fridge is, how often the lid opens, and your setpoint. A packed fridge holds its cold better than an empty one.
- Battery protection is built into every setup. On Milwaukee and DeWALT, ZED's Smart LVD cuts the load at 14.0V, before the battery is damaged, then stays off until you swap in a charged battery. Makita packs use their own internal protection instead. That cutoff headroom is already in the estimate.
- Dual-zone fridge with the freezer running? Expect roughly half the runtime. Freezer compartments make the compressor work 2 to 3 times harder.
- Middle Man owners can stretch these hours. Vehicle bypass mode runs the fridge off your 12V socket while you drive, and a regulated solar panel through an Anderson Y-splitter carries the load while the sun is up. While either is doing the work, your batteries are not. Neither charges them.
Our assumptions (the exact maths)
No black box. Here is the whole model:

Where the numbers come from:
- Our bench test. A 32L Engel set to 4°C in 26°C shade, on a Middle Man with two 6Ah batteries, held temperature for about 24 hours. The calculator's mild setting reproduces that result.
- Duty cycle. National Luna's controlled testing measured a fridge compressor running 18 to 20% of the time at 21°C, 25 to 30% at 32°C and 30 to 50% at 43°C. Our 25/40/60% figures sit deliberately on the conservative side of those.
- Fridge draws. Manufacturer specs from Engel, Bushman, myCOOLMAN and Dometic, cross-checked against published real-world consumption tests (Bushman's own 0.67Ah per hour at 25°C figure, and independent measurements of the Dometic CFX3 range). Bushman is one of the few makers honest enough to publish real averages. Respect.
- LVD cutoff. On Milwaukee and DeWALT adapters the ZED Smart LVD disconnects the load at 14.0V under load, about 2.8V per cell in an 18V pack. Cell makers rate these cells flat at 2.5V per cell, and at fridge-level currents a 2.8V cutoff leaves only a few percent in the tank. Once tripped it stays off: it will not reconnect until the battery is unclipped and one reading above 15V goes back in, so a flat battery cannot be bled further. Makita packs carry their own internal protection, so ZED Makita adapters rely on the battery's disconnect. Across all three platforms we model usable capacity at 0.90 of nameplate to allow for older packs, cell imbalance and cold mornings. Honest margins beat optimistic ones.
- Adapter efficiency. Bench measured at about 95%. The other 5% is conversion loss in the regulator, and it is already in the numbers above.

One number would be a guess dressed up as a fact. The range is the honest answer. If it matters, carry a spare battery.
Fridge runtime questions, answered straight
How many amp hours do I need to run a fridge overnight?
One 5Ah or 6Ah battery gets a small fridge through a mild night, about 8 to 12 hours. Two 6Ah batteries in a Middle Man run about 24 hours. We tested that on a 32L Engel in 26°C shade. Hot weather or a bigger fridge, bring more amp hours.
Does a bigger battery still run longer in hot weather?
Yes. Runtime scales with amp hours whatever the weather. But heat makes the compressor work harder, so a 12Ah pack that does 20 plus hours in mild weather might do half that at 40°C. Shade the fridge, keep it full, open it less.
Will running a fridge flatten and damage my tool battery?
No. On Milwaukee and DeWALT, ZED adapters have a built-in Smart Low Voltage Disconnect. It cuts the load at 14.0V, well before the battery over-discharges, and then stays off. It will not reconnect until the battery is unclipped and a charged one goes back in, so a battery left clicked in overnight cannot be bled flat. Makita packs have their own internal disconnect, so ZED Makita adapters rely on the battery to look after itself. Either way, the protection is there for exactly this job.
Why is the answer a range and not one number?
Because one number would be a guess dressed up as a fact. Fridge contents, lid openings, setpoint, sun and battery age all move the result. We give you the window our testing and the manufacturer specs actually support.
What about dual-zone fridges running a freezer?
Expect roughly half the runtime, sometimes less. Independent testing shows dual-zone fridge-freezers draw 2 to 3 times more than a fridge holding 4°C. If the freezer is on, size your batteries up.
Can my vehicle or solar stretch the battery runtime?
Yes, on the Middle Man. Vehicle bypass mode plugs into your vehicle's 12V cigarette socket with the Anderson to male cigarette cable, ignition isolated, so the fridge runs off the vehicle while you drive and switches back to the batteries when you stop. No plugging and unplugging between drives. Solar works too: connect a regulated panel through the genuine Anderson Y-splitter on the output and the panel carries the fridge while the sun is up. Neither mode charges your tool batteries, but while either is doing the work the batteries are not being drained. The hours in the calculator only count down when the batteries are carrying the fridge.
My fridge is not in the list. What do I enter?
Pick "Enter my fridge's draw" and type the rated running watts off the compliance plate or manual, or the average Ah per hour if the maker publishes one. Rated watts get adjusted for compressor cycling; a published average is used as is for mild weather and scaled for heat.
