Starlink Mini on 12V: How to Run It Off Your Tool Batteries

The Starlink Mini has no built-in battery, but it runs on 12V DC, and that means the tool batteries in your ute can power it directly. The Mini draws only 20 to 40W and accepts 12 to 48V DC input, so a ZED 12V adapter and a 1m Starlink Mini to Anderson cable run it with no inverter, no generator and no heavy power station. Click in a charged Milwaukee, Makita or DeWALT battery, plug in the cable, point the dish at the sky and you are online. Does the Starlink Mini have a built-in battery?

No. The Starlink Mini has no internal battery at all. Cut its power and it drops offline, then reboots when power returns. Starlink sells it this way deliberately: it keeps the dish light, but it means the Mini always needs a constant DC supply.

That supply does not have to be a $1,000 power station. The 18V batteries already sitting in your drill kit hold plenty of energy for a work day's internet. A ZED adapter regulates them to a clean, steady 12V output, which is exactly what the Mini wants.

What voltage does Starlink Mini need?

  • Accepts 12 to 48V DC input
  • Average running load: 20 to 40W, typically about 30W in the field
  • Needs the supply to hold 13.3V or better under load, or it can drop out

That last number is the one cheap setups get wrong. A raw battery or a long skinny cable sags under load and the Mini reboots. ZED adapters hold 13.5V under load, and with the 1m cable the Mini sees 13.3V and above the whole time. We measured it on the bench, not in a brochure.

Which cable length should I get?

Off a ZED adapter: the 1m, every time. This is counterintuitive, so here is the why. Every metre of cable drops voltage under load. The Mini needs 13.3V or better, and the short 1m run is what keeps it there. A longer cable wastes power, pulls extra current and can cause dropouts.

How to set up Starlink Mini on a tool battery

  3. Connect the 1m Starlink cable. Anderson plug into the adapter, power plug into the Mini.
  4. Place the dish with a clear view of the sky.

How long will Starlink Mini run on a tool battery?

Runtime comes down to amp-hours, weather and how hard the dish is working. Real-world figures from our own use:

Do I need an inverter for Starlink Mini?

No. The Mini runs on DC, so a regulated 12V adapter is all you need. An inverter only adds weight, noise and wasted power.

Will running the Mini flatten my tool battery?

ZED Milwaukee and DeWALT adapters have the ZED Smart LVD, which cuts the output at 14.0V under load and then sits at an ultra-low idle, so a forgotten battery is not run into the ground. Makita packs have their own internal disconnect and ZED Makita adapters rely on that. Note the adapters power the Mini only, they never charge the battery.
